Internship
Program
During 2005 this chapter
was one of two COMTO chapters competitvely selected
to participate in a COMTO national internship initiative,
COMTO's Inside Track for Youth (CITY) Internship
Program. This program was supported with funding
from the U.S. Department of Transportation Federal
Transit Administration (FTA) and from Parsons Brinckerhoff,
Quade and Douglas, to support public transportation
career opportunities for minority college students.
Eight college students were hired for 10-week summer
internships at transit agencies, private transportation-related
consulting firms, including Parsons Brinckerhoff,
Quade and Douglas, Bechtel, San Francisco Municipal
Transportation Agency, Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART),
The Allen Group, and the Santa Clara Valley Transportation
Authority.
COMTO interns were given
challenging and meaningful work experiences and
were mentored by professionals at each of the agencies.
In addition to their daily assignments the interns
received valuable opportunities to interact with
transportation officials during their orientation,
various field trips, COMTO meetings, and a closing
recognition program, where the keynote speaker was
Mr. William D. Smith, President of the Parsons Brinckerhoff,
Americas Infrastructure Company.
